The Asheville Fire Fighter's Association encourages a strong unity that bonds our firefighter family tightly. With professionalism we work in cooperation to help create working conditions that are just and fair for everyone. Our development of morale boosting events and top notch training allows us to fellowship together both at and away from work. We invite all Asheville firefighters to... JOIN YOUR AFFA IAFF LOCAL 865!
"A Bold Union with a Bright Future and a Proud Tradition"
The date has been set for the Second Annual Fire Ball! Make arrangements to attend the Fire Ball on October the Second. The event will once again be at Celine and Company's "On Broadway". Evites will go out soon with all the necessary information. Last years' event was a huge success, here are some of the pictures.
Congratulations to Local 865 Member David McFee. McFee, long time member and former AFFA President, was recently promoted to Assistant Chief. He continues to be a friend to the AFFA as he, along with Chief Scott Burnette, meets with the Union Executive Board monthly to hear our concerns while keeping us up to speed on department issues. We are fortunate to have such a luxury.
Be assured that your Local 865 officers will continue to fight for fair and equal treatment, in spite of verbal attacks by specific individuals. It is hard to understand why some individuals feel they can degrade public servant unions who give long and hard hours while serving the public. However, this does appear to be a political trend in today’s society. Instead of focusing their energies on issues such as job creation during tough economic times, these individuals attack, attack, and then attack some more. The ultimate intention is to make us appear to be the enemy, thereby diverting the public’s attention from truly important matters. However, this smoke screen is ineffective at best and will eventually blow away with the wind. What’s left after these kinds of situations is your union. We will always be here to support you, and ensure that your health, safety and wellbeing are watched over.
We finally developed a newsletter that is available under "Member Resources." Please review this document, as it includes a good overview of what happened last year, and provides dates for upcoming events.
Our next regular monthly meeting will be February 26th, 0830, at Denny's on Patton Avenue. During this meeting we will begin taking nominations for President. The nomination process will end during our March meeting, which is March 26th. Please pass on this information to your fellow union brothers and sisters.
We have started a "Hunter's Corner" section under the member resources section. If you have any events that you would like posted, or pictures from recent trips, please send them to our way.
Although local wildlife has enjoyed the rain we've received, it has presented issues in regards to camp use. Please be aware that flooding will continue to be an issue in the foreseeable future. Campers on the property could become affected by future precipitation if adequate preparations are not taken in advance by their owners.
Dues for Local 865 members were approved by a membership vote during the regular meeting on January 22, 2010 to increase to $25/month. Currently, we pay per captia fees to four organizations (IAFF: $10.90/member, PFFPNC: $4.95/member, NC AFL-CIO: $.70/member, WNC-CLC: $.15/member). Additionally, each member pays $4/month for his or her life insurance policy. This comes to $20.70 per member each month. As such, we must raise the dues in order to cover each individual's per caps, and to cover other expenditures. Please contact Mike Marshall, Scott Mullins or Bjorn Larson if you have any questions.

We are updating our e-mail contact list and asking everyone with a home e-mail address to contct us so we are sure to have an acurate way to reach you without using the city's e-mail server. Send them to Scott Mullins. Thanks!
