Fire Station 6(Fightin' 6) Who's area is historically known as the "wild, wild west" is the home to one of the busiest engine companys in the city. Located at 970 Haywood Road,Engine 6 (2004 Pierce Dash Pumper 700 gal capacity, 1500 gpm pump, 25 gal class A foam tank)covers West Asheville to the city limits.
Because of the expanding limits in their first response district, E-6 is in the process of building a new station more centrally located in their still response area near the I-40/US 19-23 interchange. Completion time will be sometime in late 2005.
Six responds to a large geographic area and handles a large number of mutual aid responses to several County Fire Departments.Engine 6’s current quarters is only a short walk down Haywood Road from the Asheville Fire Department’s last line-of-duty death in 1982.FF Raymond Flowers was killed in the collapse of the steeple at the West Asheville Baptist Church fire.
