Asheville Fire & Rescue recently received a grant from OSFM to help distribute and install smoke alarms to families in need through DSS. This program works in conjunction with the ongoing smoke alarm distribution program. The goal is to distribute 200 smoke alarms to families responding to DSS for other needs. These are individuals who are most likely in lower income housing or may be staying with several individuals in a single household.
AFR is also working on getting additional funding in order to purchase several smoke alarms for the hearing impaired. There is a need for these devices in our area and several requests for them through our department. Therefore, AFR would like to try and help our local citizens who are hearing impaired to assure they too can get out in case of fire.
